Dr. Brian Taylor began working in full-time ministry in 2002, serving as a missionary for Every Nation Campus Ministries on several campuses throughout Nashville, TN including: Vanderbilt, Tennessee State University, and Fisk University. Prior to starting his ministry career, Brian was a student athlete at Vanderbilt University where he played football. His relatability as an athlete continues to afford him the opportunity to speak with numerous college and professional teams.

Brian served on staff in churches in Nashville, TN and Orlando, FL before moving to Cincinnati to launch Every Nation Cincinnati Church as lead pastor. Every Nation Cincinnati has grown to become a multiethnic and multigenerational congregation, serving as an inspiration for his book Ready to Lead.

In addition to his work leading Every Nation Cincinnati’s multiethnic congregation, Brian serves as chaplain for the University of Cincinnati football team. He has also worked alongside other pastors on multiple city-wide initiatives, including City Servants and the Mosaix Cincinnati Network, seeking to foster collaboration and reconciliation among a diverse population.

He holds a Doctorate of Ministry degree from Asbury Theological Seminary, having completed his dissertation on the topic of leadership in the multiethnic church. He also works with Every Nation Seminary as a professor of Hermeneutics and Biblical Preaching. Though he continues to travel internationally for ministry, Brian resides in Cincinnati, OH with his wife Chavonne, who is herself a leader in the field of education, and their children Elijah, Saniya, and Joshua.

There is an ongoing narrative that has often been taken as truth in the Body of Christ: “Black people will follow a White pastor but White people will never follow a Black pastor.” This book acknowledges the history from which this narrative came while looking to push a new narrative where the whole Body of Christ can benefit from the gift of Black leadership. Many books have asked, “How do we see diversity in the pews?” But this book looks to see diversity in the pulpits and leadership rooms of these churches.

Praise for Ready to Lead

Ready to Lead is a much needed work that adds depth, perspective and practical steps to an ongoing conversation about what diversity in the body of Christ can look like among those of different ethnicities who have reconciled hearts. This book is a must read for anyone who wants to see the Kingdom in its multicolored expression. Dr. Brian Taylor and Dr. Chris Johnson are two voices that have been anointed to speak to the church on this subject with clarity, compassion and conviction.

Black spiritual leaders are rarely considered by White Christians as their potential pastors.

The agonizing historical bridge to cross is too long, the cultural gap is too wide, and the difference in both group’s perspective on America is more distinguishable than “blue” states are from “red”. Still, there is not a problem for which the Gospel does not have an answer. Pastors Brian Taylor and Chris Johnson have mined out and deployed the biblical truths that dismantle the barriers intended to divide; giving conciliatory hope to generational adversaries.

Ready to Lead is a hard-hitting, honest read, that is full of grace and practical advice. It calls us to lean into the messy work of authentic racial reconciliation and not shrink back from the pain of injustice. A must-read for anyone interested in modeling revival – here and now.

Carl Stauffer, PhDSenior Expert, Reconciliation/United States Institute of Peace

If you can handle an, at times, painfully honest book about the realities of Black leadership in multi-ethnic churches then you’ll find Ready to Lead to be a wealth of insights and practical wisdom. From a biblical foundation, Brian Taylor and Chris Johnson examine the tough issues Black leaders confront and they detail a redemptive path forward.

Justin GiboneyAttorney and Political Strategist/President and Co-Founder of And Campaign

Several years ago, Brian, Chris, and I were classmates at Asbury Theological Seminary’s Doctor of Ministry program. Since then, they have both become close friends and conversation partners in ministry, church leadership, and theology.

Brian and Chris are passionate about building churches that reflect the diversity of God’s Kingdom-something that is evident immediately when you walk into both of their churches. In their new book, Ready to Lead: Essential Questions for Empowering Black Leadership in the Multiethnic Church, you will hear their heart for diversity and learn the steps necessary to make this dream a reality in your own church.

I encourage every pastor to read this book as we consider how to build churches that welcome all people and reflect the diversity of the Kingdom. Building a multiethnic church is not easy, but Brian and Chris share well-researched arguments and hard-earned wisdom to help us do it well.
